The unusual, semi-circular staircase on the theatre square in Chemnitz had to be renovated. High visual requirements made the project a challenge. With the MC-DUR TopSpeed coating system from MC-Bauchemie, it was possible to combine function and aesthetics and to preserve the city's cultural meeting point in line with its listed status.

Central meeting place

Chemnitz Theatre Square is a central location in the city that combines history, culture and community. Located on the Straße der Nationen near the main railway station, it is surrounded by magnificent buildings: the Chemnitz Opera House, the Petrikirche, the Hotel Chemnitzer Hof and the König-Albert Museum. Over the years, the theatre square has become a central meeting place for public events. The surrounding cafés, restaurants and shops invite you to linger and stroll. The eye-catcher of the theatre square is the so-called Theatron, a semi-circular stone staircase that is used as an open-air stage.

Effective refurbishment solution

Over time, the steps of the theatre suffered from the weather and the many visitors.Cracks and signs of wear and tear were the result. A quick and effective refurbishment solution was therefore required to restore the safety and aesthetics of the theatre.The client, the civil engineering department of the city of Chemnitz, and the contractor Grötz Bauunternehmen GmbH from Niederdorf in Saxony found this in the innovative MC-DUR TopSpeed coating system from MC-Bauchemie.The system components based on KineticBoost-Technology® ensure accelerated curing of the floor coating and offer particularly high abrasion resistance and enormous durability. In addition, surfaces can be designed variably with MC-DUR TopSpeed. Properties that were particularly important for the project in Chemnitz.

High aesthetic standards

The staircase is a listed building and its appearance is protected by copyright. As the final appearance was of particular importance, various aggregates and grain sizes were tested in advance for the bedding. One major challenge was to incorporate a coarse grain size into the system by blowing it into both the horizontal and vertical surfaces. The renovation work began in May 2023. After preparing the substrate, the MC-DUR TopSpeed SC reactive resin was applied as a primer and scratch coat. The coloured roller coating MC-DUR TopSpeed was then applied, sprinkled with the object-specific grain mixture and sealed with MC-DUR TopSpeed T transparent. Finally, MC-DUR TopSpeed M was used as a top sealer to create a matt finish. The result impressed everyone involved and shows how the interplay of history, culture and modern restoration technology can be successful.
