India

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), India’s longest sea bridge, was inaugurated on 12th January 2024 in a grand ceremony by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To permanently protect the structure from damaging environmental influences and carbonation, EmceColor-Flex – also known globally as MC-Color Flex – was pressed into action for the entire bridge surface.

Mumbai, also known as India’s financial capital, is a densely populated metropolitan region with over 20 million inhabitants on the west coast of India. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, is a 21.8 km long, six-lane sea bridge that will enhance connectivity between Mumbai and its suburb of Navi Mumbai. Mumbai is home to one of India's largest harbours, as well as a number of financial institutions and industries. The infrastructure project, with a cost of 2.2 billion US dollars, was awarded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to a consortium of the companies AECOM, PADECO, Dar Al-Handasah and TY Lin.

EmceColor-flex protection coating sets the standards

With 16.5 km of the total bridge length located over the sea, it would be exposed to a variety of environmental influences across its entire lifetime. To protect the bridge from the damaging effects of seawater, chlorides and carbonation, the clients were looking for a proven solution. MC-Bauchemie India’s EmceColor-Flex, with its numerous reference projects and proven performance was considered the top-runner in this race. Approvals from both the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Indian Road Congress are a testament to this fact.

Concrete protection against adverse environmental conditions

EmceColor-flex – also known globally as MC-Color Flex - is a crack-bridging coating for exposed concrete surfaces that protects against adverse environmental conditions. The protection coating is flexible, open to water vapour diffusion, carbonation-inhibiting, crack-bridging and UV- and weather-resistant. A primer, Primex 250, and a universal filler, Nafuquick, complement complete a system that has been used successfully for years on bridges, infrastructure and buildings and has become the standard for anti-carbonation coatings in India.

Sophisticated concrete protection system by design

The EmceColor-flex system was used on all the three work packages of the MTHL in Mumbai. The concrete surfaces of the bridge were first smoothed using the fine-filler mortar Nafuquick. This finely graded, polymer-modified, cement-based repair mortar is used to fill pores, cavities, and level out unevenness in the concrete. This was followed by a coating of Primex 250, a primer which ensures high adhesion for subsequent coatings. Finally, two coats of the coating EmceColor-flex were applied.

MC India ensures maximum customer satisfaction

In addition to the outstanding protection properties of the EmceColor-Flex system, MC-Bauchemie India’s intensive customer support during the testing as well as the execution stages ensured complete customer satisfaction. Since its inauguration on 12th January 2024, the MTHL has shortened journey time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from two hours to just twenty minutes. This has significantly reduced traffic jams and bottlenecks and enhanced connectivity to the financial capital of India.
